UN observers have counted at least 90 bodies, including 32 children, after a Syrian government attack on a town.
UN mission head Maj-Gen Robert Mood told the BBC the killing in Houla was “indiscriminate and unforgivable”.
UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would seek a strong international response to the “appalling crime” - France and the Arab League have also condemned the massacre.
Syria’s government has blamed the deaths on “armed terrorist gangs”.
This is one of the bloodiest attacks in one area since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.
Activists say some of the victims died by shelling, while others were summarily executed, or butchered by the regime militia known as the “shabiha” …

How gracious of the UN observers to finally turn-up and do the one job they’re actually there for.
The UN observers are evidently no better than the useless Arab League observers of some months ago - such blinding incompetence from the global political elite, renders them complicit in my books.

23rd of May, 1992. A day we must always remember.
20 years ago today, a massive amount of TNT exploded on the roadside near Capaci.
The Italian prosecuting magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and body guards(police officers, “guardian angels”, who never left their sides) Rocco Dicillo, Antonio Montinaro and Vito Schifani were killed. The explosives were placed inside a tunnel under the road previously and was detonated by the Sicilian Mafias, more specifically by those of Corleone lead by the infamous boss Totò Riina.
Falcone was taken to the hospital but passed away an hour later. Borsellino, who had rushed there to see him as soon as he’d heard the news, walked out of the hospital and said, “He died in my arms”.
57 days later, in via d’Amelio, Paolo Borsellino and his body guards meet the same fate. A car with tons of explosives literally blew them up into pieces. Even when he knew he was next in line after Falcone’s death, Borsellino hadn’t stopped the fight. He pushed himself further, working harder than ever to find out the truth of Falcone’s death, until his very last day.
A team of brave magistrates(the “Pool Anti-Mafia”) lead by Falcone and his close friend and colleague Paolo Borsellino had dedicated thier lives in bringing down the empire of the Sicilian Mafia, while its very existence was being hushed and dare not spoken aloud of those years. An impressive number (more than 800) of members of and politicians related to the criminal organization were arrested and sentenced guilty, thanks to their hard work.
The killers of the Corleone may be those who placed the explosives but it wasn’t just the Mafia who killed them. While the mindless violence spilt blood on the streets of Palermo, a few great men had battled alone.
They were murdered because they were getting too close to the names of politicians that were just as desperate as “the boss” Riina himself, to protect their blood stained empire . Many refuse to believe those who were eventually charged of the deaths are the only ones involved. Both Falcone and Borsellino knew many important names, which probably was why the Mafia eliminated them in such hurry in the first place, and some of them we may never see brought to justice. Because those corrupted men who sold their souls for money, who are holding hands with the devil, who gained power by the blood shed of men, women and children are still free and protected. We cry in rage and shame because we fear that for what this country has become, those heroes had died in vane.
He who is silent and bows his head dies every time he does so. He who speaks aloud and walks with his head held high dies only once. —Giovanni Falcone
They will kill me, but it will not be a mafia’s revenge, mafia do not use murder to get revenge. Maybe mafia will physically kill me, but he/she who will actually order my murder will be “others”. —Paolo Borsellino
The fight against mafia, which is the first problem to solve in our unfortunate and beautiful land, must be not only a cold repressive action, but a moral and cultural movement, involving everyone, especially younger generations, the most fit to feel the beauty of the fresh taste of freedom that sweeps away the foulness of moral compromise, of indifference, of contiguity and, hence, of complicity. —Paolo Borsellino, from the speech during Falcone’s funerals
(quotes translated into English taken from wikipedia)
True heroes exist. And the fight still continues. So many people fought and gave their lives for us, for our future.
The Mafia might have taken their lives but they can never kill their dreams, hopes and dedication to freedom and justice. Their spirit will live forever as long as we never forget.

Food and travel go together like planes and airports. No matter where you go you’ll have little trouble finding at least one culinary experience that will help you understand the local culture. In some countries the food is the highlight, drawing many a foodie to its borders, like a moth to a flame. Here are 11 countries (in no particular order) that your taste buds will thank you for visiting.

Standing at the crossroads of India, China and Oceania, Thai cuisine is like a best-of of all three’s techniques and ingredients. Dishes generally go in hard with garlic and chillies (especially the phrik khii nuu variety, which literally translates as ‘mouseshit peppers’). Other signature ingredients include lime juice, coriander and lemon grass, which give the cuisine its characteristic tang. Legendary fish sauce or shrimp paste looks after the salt.

From olives to octopus, the true taste of Greece depends on fresh, unadulterated staples. Masking or complicating original flavours is not the done thing, especially when you’re dealing with oven-fresh bread, rosy tomatoes and fish fresh from the Mediterranean. The midday meal is the main event with a procession of goodies brought to the table as they’re ready. With Wednesday and Friday traditionally reserved as fast days (ie no-meat days), vegetarians are also looked after.

From back-alley dumpling shops to four-star banquet halls, China has one of the world’s finest palates. Cultural precepts of Yin and Yang (balance and harmony) are evident in the bowl: with food for the day including cooling foods such as vegetables and fruit to counter warming spices and meat. The Chinese revere rice but also choose noodles, with either almost always accompanying a meal. A range of regional specialities exist, variously influenced by geography and history.

From cheese and champagne to snails and baguettes, the French are famous for their foodstuffs. French cuisine has long distinguished itself for dallying with a great variety of foods. Each region’s distinct climate and geography have influenced the array of regional specialities. Many in France consider lunch as the day’s main meal, though the two hour marathon meal is increasingly rare. The crowning meal is a fully fledged home-cooked dinner comprising six distinct plats (courses).

Best in Barcelona, Catalan cooking is racking up the accolades from gourmands around the globe. Like other regional Spanish cuisines, Catalan cooking favours spices such as saffron and cumin, as well as honeyed sweets. A mixture of ingredients and traditions adds flair to Barcelona’s fare: using seafood and meats in a rich array of sauces. Dinner is the main event, but never before 9pm.

Would you like some magic-realism with that enchilada? The Mexican sensibility for enchanting influences is also brought to the table in its food, particularly during celebrations. Mexican cuisine has an overriding Spanish influence, with a twist of French and African thanks to its history. Corn and bean-based dishes are prominent – prepared in a multitude of world renowned ways including tacos, enchiladas andquesadillas. And who could forget the worm that waits at the bottom of a bottle of Mezcal?

Its food is arguably Italy‘s most famous export, and it’s with good reason that the world wants it. Despite all the variations that exist between regions, some common staples bind the country’s culinary creations. Think thin-crust pizza and al dente pastas and risottos. And to drink? One word: coffee. The Italians do it best – from perfecting a distinguished roast to the gentle extraction of its essence into the cup. Perfecto!

India’s protean gastronomy changes shape as you move between neighbourhoods, towns and states. The basis of all meals is rice in the south, and roti in the north. These are generally partnered with dhal, vegetables and chutney. Fish or meat may also be added. Whatever the ingredients: the dish usually contains a heady cast of exotic spices that make the taste buds stand up and take notice.

If you can wrap your tongue around pronouncing the menu, Japan’s cuisine is a most rewarding mouthful. Most Japanese restaurants concentrate on a specialty cuisine, such as yakitori (skewers of grilled chicken or veg), sushi and sashimi (raw fish), tempura (lightly battered and fried ingredients) and ramen noodle bars. The pinnacle of Japanese cooking, kaiseki (derived as an adjunct to the tea ceremony), combines ingredients, preparation, setting and ceremony over several small courses to distinguish the gentle art of eating.

Indonesian and Malaysian cuisines are one big food swap: Chinese, Portuguese, Indian, colonists and traders have all influenced their ingredients and culinary concepts. They are nations well represented by their food. The abundance of rice is characteristic of the region’s fertile terraced landscape, the spices are reminiscent of a time of trade and invasion (the Spice Islands), and fiery chilli echoes the people’s passion. Indonesian and Malaysian cooking is not complex, and tastes here stay separate, simple and substantial.
